History and development

Before the nation's 1990 unification, two separate teams represented North Yemen and South Yemen in international fixtures. After unification the national side continued under a single governing body. Football has long been a popular sport in Yemen, but progress at the international level has been constrained by economic and political difficulties that have affected domestic leagues, player development, and the ability to host matches at home.

The team is organised by the country's football association. Home fixtures have at times been staged at several domestic venues and, during periods of instability, at neutral venues abroad for safety and logistical reasons.
