Xavier Tilliette: French Jesuit Philosopher, Historian and Theologian

Life and academic career

Tilliette trained in philosophy under notable figures of mid-20th century France, among them Jean Wahl and Vladimir Jankélévitch, whose interests in existential and moral questions influenced his approach. After entering the Jesuits he took on teaching and research roles in a number of Catholic institutions. He was named professor emeritus at the Catholic Institute of Paris in 1969 and later held teaching appointments at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome (1972), the Lateran University and the Jesuit Centre Sèvres in Paris. Active as a teacher and writer for many decades, Tilliette remained a visible figure in European philosophical and theological circles into advanced age.
