Xalapa (often spelled Jalapa) is the capital city of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Officially named Xalapa-Enríquez, the city sits in the central highlands of the state and functions as an administrative, cultural and educational hub. The municipality covers 118.45 km²; earlier official figures recorded a city population in the hundreds of thousands (a 2005 census figure commonly cited is 387,879), and the population has continued to change since that count. Xalapa is noted for a temperate, humid climate and its position above the coastal plain.

10 ImagesGeography and climate
Xalapa lies at a substantial elevation on the eastern side of the Sierra Madre Oriental — roughly around 1,300–1,500 metres above sea level. Because of that altitude and nearby cloud forests, the city experiences cooler temperatures and frequent mist and rainfall compared with the lowland Gulf coast. These conditions support lush vegetation in the surrounding valleys and make the area attractive for gardens, nurseries and crops such as coffee in higher rural zones.
History and name
The city has pre‑Hispanic origins and later developed under Spanish colonial influence into a regional administrative center. Its name derives from Náhuatl elements and is commonly interpreted to mean a place associated with sand or springs — descriptions vary among sources, so the origin is best treated cautiously. Xalapa grew in prominence through the 19th and 20th centuries and was made the state capital, concentrating government institutions and services.
Culture, education and economy
Xalapa is well known for cultural life: museums, concert venues and galleries are prominent, as is the presence of a major university that attracts students from across the region. The city's museums include important collections of archaeology and regional art, while parks and colonial-era streets reflect its historical layers. The economy combines public administration, education, services and commerce; agricultural production of coffee and other highland crops remains important in surrounding municipalities.
Landmarks and urban character
Visitors commonly note Xalapa's tree-lined avenues, public plazas and colonial architecture alongside modern government buildings and university campuses. Public green spaces, botanical gardens and a reputation for flowers and nurseries help define the urban character. Annual cultural events and a lively café scene also contribute to the city's local identity.
Administration and connections
As the seat of state government, Xalapa hosts executive and legislative offices and regional administrative agencies. It occupies a central position within Veracruz, providing road and communication links to the Gulf coast and to other inland communities; it is the second-largest city in the state after the port city of Veracruz and a focal point for services across the region.
