Overview
Wright County is a county in the U.S. state of Minnesota. At the time of the 2010 census the county recorded a population of about 124,700. The administrative center and seat of government is Buffalo, which functions as the county's primary courthouse and service hub; the formal designation of the seat appears in county records as the county seat.
Geography and communities
Located to the northwest of the Minneapolis–Saint Paul metropolitan area, Wright County combines lakes, river corridors and rolling agricultural land. Its landscape includes numerous small lakes and parcels of mixed woodlands, which support outdoor recreation and seasonal tourism. Communities range from small towns and townships to suburban neighborhoods where many residents commute to the Twin Cities.
History
The county was established in 1855 during the mid-19th-century settlement of Minnesota. It was named for Silas Wright, a prominent American politician of that era. Settlement and development were driven by agriculture, later joined by industry and suburban expansion as the region grew.
Economy and transportation
The local economy is diverse: agriculture and related businesses remain important in rural areas, while manufacturing, retail and professional services employ residents in towns and suburbs. Good regional road links connect the county to the Twin Cities, enabling commuting and commerce; public and regional transit options supplement roadway travel for some communities.
Government, services and recreation
County government operates through elected boards and departments that manage public safety, courts, roads, land use and social services. Recreational amenities include lakeside parks, trails and community festivals that reflect a mix of small-town character and suburban growth.
