Characteristics

The summit of White Butte reaches approximately 3,506 feet (about 1,069 meters) above sea level. It is a classic butte: a hill with steep sides and a relatively flat top, formed by differential erosion of sedimentary rock layers. Vegetation is typical of mixed-grass prairie and sparse badlands flora. The area around the butte features the rugged, dissected terrain commonly called the Badlands and is administratively within Slope County.

Geology and landscape

White Butte sits in a landscape shaped by wind and water erosion acting on layers of sandstone, siltstone, shale and occasional coal seams. Over long timescales, softer layers have been worn away more quickly than resistant caprock, leaving isolated hills and ridges. These processes create the characteristic gullies, pinnacles and short, steep slopes of the Badlands region; similar processes are responsible for other buttes and hoodoos in nearby terrain.

Access and recreation

Access to White Butte is typically by gravel or dirt roads and a short walk to the summit; the route can be remote and subject to weather and road conditions. Visitors should prepare with water, appropriate footwear and navigation aids. The site is popular with hikers pursuing the list of U.S. state high points and with people interested in geology, landscape photography and prairie ecosystems.
