Geography and layout

Wevelgem occupies low-lying terrain typical of western Belgium, with river valleys used historically for transport and agriculture. The Leie crosses the area and has influenced local settlement patterns. The town is within easy road distance of Kortrijk and is set in a region of mixed farmland, light industry and suburban development.

History and development

The locality developed over centuries as part of the historic County of Flanders. Like many towns in this part of West Flanders, Wevelgem grew with textile and flax-processing trades that used river transport. The area experienced significant military activity during the world wars; remnants of that history are visible in regional cemeteries and former airfields. The present Kortrijk–Wevelgem airport has roots in earlier military and civil aviation use.

Economy, culture and events

The local economy mixes small manufacturing, services and agriculture, and many residents commute to larger nearby towns. Wevelgem is widely known in sport because it is traditionally linked to the spring classic cycling race Gent–Wevelgem, which finishes in or near the town; the event attracts international attention and follows routes that pass over nearby hills such as the Kemmelberg. Local cultural life includes community festivals, municipal facilities and small museums documenting regional industry and wartime history.
