West Point is both an active U.S. Army installation and the campus commonly called the United States Military Academy. It is widely recognized as the oldest continuously occupied military post in the United States. The post occupies a strategic position on the western bank of the Hudson River in New York, and the name "West Point" is often used to refer specifically to the academy that trains Army officers.
Location and scope
West Point lies within the Town of Highlands in Orange County. The installation and its associated lands encompass roughly 16,000 acres (about 6,500 hectares), a mix of campus buildings, military facilities, training areas and protected open space. The United States Military Academy campus itself is commonly referenced simply as West Point. As a Census Designated Place the community had a population of 6,763 at the 2010 census; the surrounding towns and villages, including Highland Falls, maintain close ties to the post.History and development
West Point's military significance predates the academy: during the American Revolutionary War the location was fortified to control river traffic and deny movement to opposing forces. Over the 19th century the site evolved into the United States Military Academy, formally established in the early 1800s to provide systematic military education. Many of the campus buildings, landscape features and fortifications reflect this long development and the role West Point has played in American military history.Campus, institutions and traditions
The academy is a residential, four‑year institution that combines academic studies, military training and physical development for members of the Corps of Cadets. Graduates are commissioned as officers in the U.S. Army. West Point is known for distinctive traditions — ceremonial parades, the Corps' customs, the class ring and the continuity often called the "Long Gray Line" — as well as for its engineering and leadership curricula.Notable features and public access
Visitors to the area can view historic and ceremonial sites, museum collections and vantage points overlooking the Hudson. Notable campus locations include Trophy Point, the Cadet Chapel and remnants of 18th-century fortifications. The post operates museums and guided tours that interpret its military, architectural and landscape heritage, and many campus structures are protected as historically significant.- United States Military Academy — academic and training center
