Wayne Walker (September 30, 1936 – May 19, 2017) was an American professional football player and later a well-known sports broadcaster. Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, Walker spent his entire National Football League playing career with the Detroit Lions, where he became a fixture on defense and a respected team leader.
Playing career
Walker played 15 seasons in the NFL from 1958 through 1972. Although primarily a linebacker responsible for tackling, coverage and defensive reads, he also served as a placekicker at times — a dual role that was more common in earlier eras of professional football. He appeared in 200 regular-season games, which at the time was the second-highest total for a defensive player.
Style and recognition
Walker was noted for his consistency, durability and intelligence on the field. His play earned him selection to three Pro Bowls and three first-team All-NFL honors. Those accolades reflected both peer respect and recognition by sports writers and coaches for his contributions on defense across a sustained career.
Broadcasting and post-playing career
After retiring as a player following the 1972 season, Walker moved into broadcasting. He worked as a sportscaster with CBS and later became sports director for KPIX-TV in San Francisco, a position he held from 1974 to 1994. His transition from the locker room to the newsroom made him a familiar voice and face to viewers in two regions where he had strong ties.
Honors and legacy
Walker's durable career and later media presence secured him a lasting place in regional sports history. In December 1999 he was ranked ninth on a list of the greatest sports figures from Idaho compiled by Sports Illustrated. Teammates and later colleagues remembered him for professionalism, work ethic and his role as an early example of a player who successfully moved into television.
Illness and death
In June 2007 Walker was diagnosed with throat cancer and underwent chemotherapy and radiation, treatments that affected his health and weight. He was later diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2015. Walker died in Boise on May 19, 2017, from complications related to his illness, leaving behind a legacy that spans professional sport and broadcast journalism.
