Vogorno is a village in the Verzasca Valley of the Swiss canton of Ticino. Historically it functioned as an independent municipality in the district of Locarno within Ticino, in Switzerland. The settlement stands above the waterbody known locally as Lago di Vogorno, a reservoir that occupies part of the narrow Verzasca gorge. The village combines traditional stone houses, terraced slopes and a compact historic centre.

Geography and setting

Vogorno sits on the slopes overlooking the Verzasca river valley. Its position above the reservoir gives the village views of steep valley walls, mountain pastures and the dammed watercourse below. The local landscape is typical of Ticinese mountain villages: narrow lanes, dry-stone walls and chestnut and larch woods on the surrounding slopes.

History and administration

For centuries Vogorno was administered as a small rural community within the Locarno district. In a regional reorganisation aimed at simplifying local government and strengthening services, Vogorno ceased to be an autonomous municipality on 17 October 2020. On that date it merged with the neighbouring communes of Brione (Verzasca), Corippo, Frasco and Sonogno to create the new municipality called Verzasca.

Culture and architecture

The village church is a noted local landmark: its interior contains frescoes that date to about 1400, reflecting the medieval artistic heritage of the region. Scattered chapels, old stone houses and traditional balconies contribute to Vogorno’s cultural character. Local craftsmen historically worked wood and stone for building and agricultural tools.

Tourism and significance

Vogorno and the surrounding Verzasca Valley attract visitors for hiking, river scenery and the distinctive architecture of alpine-Ticinese villages. Lago di Vogorno and the Verzasca dam are focal points for sightseeing and photography, while trails link the village with neighbouring settlements and mountain pastures. The area is valued for its combination of natural beauty and preserved rural life.
