The village retained a long history as an independent commune until a municipal reorganisation. On 17 October 2020 the former municipalities of Brione (Verzasca), Corippo, Frasco, Sonogno and Vogorno were merged to create the new municipality of Verzasca. This consolidation was part of a wider trend in Switzerland to combine small local administrations for efficiency and improved services.
Geography and built environment
Frasco sits within a steep, forested valley carved by the Verzasca river. The settlement is characterized by narrow streets, terraces, and traditional stone houses with slate roofs, reflecting building styles adapted to alpine conditions. The surrounding landscape includes chestnut woods, pastures and steep rock faces popular with hikers and nature enthusiasts.
Economy, culture and tourism
Historically the local economy relied on small-scale farming, pastoralism and forestry. In recent decades tourism and outdoor recreation have become increasingly important, with visitors drawn to valley trails, the clear Verzasca river and nearby cultural heritage sites. The valley also contains notable engineering landmarks and attractions that serve the wider region.
Notable facts and distinctions
