Biological and physiological basis

Biological vision begins at the eye, where a lens focuses light onto a light-sensitive layer called the retina. Photoreceptor cells convert photons into electrical signals that are relayed through retinal circuitry to the optic nerve and processed in brain regions such as the visual cortex. Key components include acuity (sharpness), color sensitivity, depth cues and motion detection. Development, injury, disease and aging can alter each stage of the visual pathway, producing a range of impairments from refractive errors to cortical visual dysfunction.

Perception and cognition

Perception is more than sensing: the brain organizes visual input into objects and scenes, fills gaps, recognizes patterns and attributes meaning. Processes such as attention, memory and expectation influence what we see. Vision includes specialized abilities—face recognition, reading, spatial navigation—and relies on integration with other senses to create a coherent representation of the environment.

Computer vision is the field that builds algorithms to interpret images and video. Modern systems use statistical learning and deep neural networks to perform tasks like object detection, image classification, optical character recognition and 3D reconstruction. Applications span autonomous vehicles, medical imaging, manufacturing inspection, robotics and consumer photography.

Beyond the physiological, "vision" denotes foresight, goals, or revelatory experiences: a leader's strategic vision, an artist's creative vision, or a religious vision. These uses emphasize imagining and communicating an intended future or insight rather than literal sight.
