Life and career

Du Vigneaud was born in Chicago and trained in chemistry at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign before spending a year in industry with a chemical firm. He returned to academia to complete doctoral work, receiving his Ph.D. in 1927. Early in his career he taught for a year at a medical school and then pursued research in Europe, working in laboratories in Germany and Scotland. On returning to the United States he held academic appointments at the University of Illinois, George Washington University Medical School, and, from 1938 until his retirement in 1967, at Cornell University Medical College in New York City.

Du Vigneaud's laboratory concentrated on small peptide hormones and the chemistry of sulfur-containing compounds. He elucidated the amino acid sequence of oxytocin and showed how a disulfide bridge helps to stabilize the molecule's active conformation.
