Ivane "Vano" Zodelava (Georgian: ივანე [ვანო] ზოდელავა; 2 May 1957 – 5 February 2019) was a Georgian politician best known for serving as mayor of Tbilisi from 10 August 1998 until 19 April 2004. Born in Tbilisi when it was part of the Georgian SSR in the Soviet Union, he was active in municipal and national politics and was associated with the Union of Citizens of Georgia during his public career.
Early life and political rise
Zodelava came of age during the late Soviet period and entered public administration in the years of Georgia's transition after independence. Like many Georgian officials of his generation, his career bridged Soviet-era institutions and the emerging structures of the independent state. He affiliated with the Union of Citizens of Georgia, a prominent political movement in the late 1990s and early 2000s. His selection as mayor reflected both municipal experience and ties to national political networks of that era.
Tenure as mayor of Tbilisi
As mayor, Zodelava led the capital through a period of post-Soviet recovery and political change. The mayoralty in Tbilisi carries responsibilities for city services, infrastructure, urban planning and public safety, and his office dealt with those routine municipal functions as well as the broader challenges of modernization. His time in office overlapped with major national events, including economic adjustments and the political unrest that culminated in the late-2003 changes in Georgia's government.

Later life and death
After leaving the mayoral post in 2004, Zodelava remained a figure in local political circles. In July 2017 he was seriously injured in a road accident and was reported to have been in a coma thereafter; contemporary reports described his medical condition and extended hospitalization (reports on the coma). He died in a Tbilisi hospital on 5 February 2019 at the age of 61.
Legacy and context
Zodelava's period in office is part of the broader story of Tbilisi's post-Soviet transformation. Assessments of his impact vary: supporters point to the difficulties faced by municipal authorities during a time of scarce resources and rapid change, while critics place his tenure within the contested politics of the era. His life and career illustrate the close link between national political movements and city-level governance in Georgia at the turn of the 21st century.
