Roles and mandate

UNECA’s mandate covers policy analysis, capacity building, technical assistance and the production of regional statistics. It advises member states on macroeconomic policy, trade, infrastructure, governance, and sustainable development while promoting cooperation across borders to address shared challenges. The commission provides evidence-based research and convenes policymakers to translate international goals into national and regional strategies.

Main activities

  • Economic and social policy research and advisory services for governments and regional bodies.
  • Capacity development and technical assistance in areas such as statistics, trade policy, and resource mobilization.
  • Data collection and analysis to inform planning and monitor progress on development targets.
  • Facilitating regional integration, infrastructure cooperation and South–South partnerships.

UNECA operates through a central secretariat and a network of subregional and country offices. Its leadership is provided by an Executive Secretary appointed within the UN system. The commission frequently collaborates with continental organizations, multilateral partners and national ministries to ensure coherence between African priorities and global frameworks.

History and development

Formed in the late 1950s during a period of rapid political change across Africa, the commission’s original purpose was to support newly independent states in pursuing economic development. Over time UNECA’s focus has broadened to include trade facilitation, gender-responsive development, climate resilience and support for continental initiatives. It contributes to the implementation of international agendas such as the Sustainable Development Goals and continental strategies for integration and industrialization.

UNECA is widely regarded as a key policy institution for Africa, producing regular reports, statistical series and policy briefs that inform decision-makers and the public. Its role as a technical partner and convenor helps translate research into actionable policies and coordinated regional responses to economic, social and environmental challenges.
