Network and services

The Transperth network comprises three principal modes. The bus network covers suburbs and local routes, feeding rail stations and shopping centres. The suburban rail system runs multiple electrified lines across the metropolitan area, while a short ferry crossing connects key riverside destinations. Together these services are planned to create seamless end-to-end journeys for commuters, students and visitors.

Train services operate on several named corridors that serve different parts of the metropolitan area. Major corridors include the Joondalup, Midland, Fremantle, Armadale and Mandurah lines, with additional airport and infill links added by state programs. All rail services use electric trains powered via the network's overhead supply, avoiding local diesel emissions and providing rapid suburban transit (electricity).

History and development

Transperth traces its identity to a consolidation of metropolitan services in the late 20th century, created to simplify and modernise public transport in the region. Over ensuing decades the network has expanded, with new suburban lines and station upgrades delivered to meet population growth. Infrastructure projects have focused on greater frequency, accessibility upgrades and connections to the airport and new suburban centres.

Ticketing, fares and accessibility

Fares are coordinated across bus, train and ferry modes so passengers can transfer between services on a single ticket. The principal electronic ticket is a reusable smartcard, widely used for daily travel and season tickets. Stations and vehicles are progressively modified to improve accessibility for people with reduced mobility, and timetables are designed to link major destinations such as universities and hospitals (universities).

Uses, operators and notable facts

Transperth serves a wide range of journeys: commuter travel to the CBD, trips to education campuses, leisure routes and short river crossings. Private operators often run bus contracts under the Transperth brand, while passenger information, ticketing and standards are set centrally. A short ferry across the Swan River remains a popular tourist and local link, notably serving attractions and parkland on either bank.
