Overview

Anthony Paul "Tony" Mills (7 July 1962 – 18 September 2019) was an English rock performer noted for his work as a lead vocalist and collaborator. He rose to prominence with the British melodic hard rock scene and is widely remembered for fronting the band Shy and later joining the Norwegian group TNT. Born in Solihull, Warwickshire, he combined a powerful tenor delivery with melodic sensibilities common to AOR and melodic rock.

Career and musical activity

Mills came to notice during the era when radio-friendly hard rock and AOR gained popularity. As a principal singer he helped shape Shy's sound, contributing to albums, tours and an international following. He subsequently worked with a variety of groups and projects, joining TNT as their vocalist for a period and recording with other artists as a guest singer. In addition to band work, Mills released solo material that explored rock, pop and soulful melodic styles.

Style and voice

Mills was recognized for a clear, high-register voice that adapted from driving rock anthems to more restrained ballads. His approach emphasized melody and phrasing, making him a fit for bands oriented toward hooks and choruses. Colleagues and fans noted his ability to serve both heavier arrangements and radio-oriented songs without losing tonal warmth.

Legacy and importance

While never a mainstream pop star, Mills left a notable imprint within the AOR/melodic rock community. His recordings with Shy helped define a UK take on melodic hard rock, and his tenure with TNT exposed him to a broader international audience. He is remembered by peers for his professionalism, versatility and steady live performances.

Illness and death

In April 2019 Mills announced he had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. The news drew messages of support from fans and fellow musicians. He died on 18 September 2019 at the age of 57.
