Artistic style and themes

Toms' drawing style was marked by clear, economical line work and expressive faces that conveyed emotion and comic timing without elaborate detail. His humour leaned toward gentle satire rather than sharp political critique, often focusing on family relationships, childhood mischief, village customs, schooling and neighbourly quarrels. He used recurring local types and small, everyday moments to produce both warmth and mild social commentary.

Boban and Molly

Boban and Molly are brother-and-sister characters who live in a Kerala village; their stories revolve around schooldays, festivals, pranks and the adults who interrupt or enable their mischief. The strip expanded with a supporting cast—parents, friends, teachers and quirky neighbours—so that Toms could explore different facets of rural and small-town life. Collections and selected strips have been reprinted in book form and are referenced in studies of regional comics; examples can be consulted at Boban and Molly.

Career and publication

Toms joined the Malayalam daily Malayala Manorama in 1961, a professional move that gave his work a broad audience across Kerala. His cartoons also appeared in other periodicals and in compilation volumes. Over a lengthy career he published scores of strips and reached readers across generations, helping to establish a vernacular tradition of comic storytelling in Malayalam. A selection of his drawings and strips is available in archives and reproductions; for examples see cartoon archive.

Legacy

Toms is remembered as a major figure in Kerala's popular arts. His ability to record ordinary life with humour and affection left an imprint on subsequent Malayalam cartoonists and on the region's visual culture. While primarily popular rather than academic, his work is often cited when scholars and commentators discuss the development of regional comics in India and the ways everyday experience is represented in sequential art.
