Overview
Martinus "Tinus" Bosselaar (16 January 1936 – 6 June 2018) was a Dutch footballer best known for his role as a left winger. Born and raised in Rotterdam, he became a prominent figure in Dutch domestic football during the 1950s and early 1960s. He is remembered for his work on the flank with two of Rotterdam's main clubs and for representing the Netherlands national team during a formative era for the sport in the country.
Early life
Bosselaar grew up in Rotterdam and came through local youth setups before making the step into senior football. His connection to the city remained important throughout his life and career, and regional press and club archives retain records of his performances and contributions to the local game (Rotterdam sources).
Club career
At club level, Bosselaar is principally associated with Sparta Rotterdam, where he established himself as a reliable left winger. He also had a spell with Feyenoord, another major Rotterdam club. Playing mainly on the left flank, he was known for pace, crossing, and the ability to support both attack and defence. Contemporary match accounts and club histories highlight his role in creating chances and supplying forwards rather than being a prolific goalscorer himself. For a concise player profile see a dedicated outline of his career (player profile).
International career
Bosselaar earned selection for the senior national side and represented the Netherlands between 1955 and 1962. His international appearances came at a time when Dutch football was transitioning from amateur to early professional structures; he provided experience on the wing for the national squad during those years.
Playing style and reputation
As a classic wide player of his generation, Bosselaar combined direct runs, accurate crossing and a willingness to track back. Teammates and reporters of the era described him as industrious and dependable, someone who fitted well into the tactical systems common in Dutch football in the mid-20th century.
Legacy and death
While not an international household name beyond the Netherlands, Bosselaar is remembered by supporters of his clubs and by historians of Dutch football as a representative figure of the postwar period. He maintained strong ties to Rotterdam throughout his life. Bosselaar died in Rotterdam on 6 June 2018 from heart failure, and his passing was noted in club announcements and sports media (announcement, local coverage).
