Overview

Tangail (Bengali: টাঙ্গাইল) is a district in central Bangladesh, administered within the Dhaka Division. The district seat, Tangail town, functions as the principal commercial and administrative center. The name also appears in Bengali script; see the local form টাঙ্গাইল জেলা.

Geography and environment

Tangail occupies a transition zone between low-lying alluvial plains and an upland patchwork that includes sections of the Madhupur tract. The landscape is shaped by seasonal rivers and wetlands, with fertile soils that support intensive cultivation. Pockets of deciduous forest and elevated ground give the district a mix of agricultural and semi-forested habitats.

Economy and traditional crafts

Agriculture is a major economic driver, with rice, jute and other crops widely cultivated. Tangail is particularly famous for its handloom industry: the Tangail saree—handwoven cotton and silk garments with distinctive borders and motifs—has a reputation across the country. Alongside weaving, small-scale manufacturing, trade and service sectors sustain urban and rural livelihoods.

History and administration

The area that is now Tangail has a long history of settlement and was shaped by regional political changes over centuries, including periods under Mughal influence and British colonial administration. As a modern administrative district it contains multiple sub-districts (upazilas), municipalities and rural councils that manage local governance, health and education services.

Transport, education and culture

Tangail is connected to Dhaka and neighboring districts by a network of roads and rail links that support commerce and commuting. The district hosts a range of schools, colleges and technical institutes serving local students, while cultural life blends rural traditions, crafts and seasonal festivals. Handloom workshops and local markets remain important cultural and economic hubs.
