Geography and environment

Sutter County lies on the valley floor with low elevation, fertile soils and a network of waterways and irrigation channels. The Sacramento River forms part of its boundary and influences local agriculture and flood control systems. Near the center of the county stand the Sutter Buttes, an isolated volcanic uplift often noted as a distinctive landmark in an otherwise flat landscape.

History and development

Organized in 1850, Sutter County grew from early settlement and land grants in the mid-19th century. Its development was shaped by agriculture, river transport and later rail and highway links.
