Sturgis is a compact community with a traditional main street, municipal services, and a mix of residential neighborhoods and commercial districts. Local life centers on government services, retail and hospitality aimed at both residents and visitors. The surrounding area includes ranching and agricultural land as well as recreational access to nearby state and federal public lands.

History

Founded in 1878 during the post‑Civil War westward expansion, Sturgis developed as a service and trade point for settlers and military installations in the region. The city took its name from Samuel D. Sturgis, a military officer who served in the later 19th century. Over time Sturgis grew modestly, anchored by county government functions and local commerce.

Sturgis Motorcycle Rally

The best‑known event associated with the city is the annual motorcycle rally that began in the late 1930s. Organized originally by local motorcyclists, the rally has since expanded into a large multi‑day event featuring rides, concerts, races, vendors and charity activities. Each August the gathering brings a surge of visitors and is the principal driver of Sturgis's visitor economy.
