Steven Patrick “Steve” Byrnes (April 14, 1959 – April 21, 2015) was an American television announcer and producer who specialized in motorsports coverage. He became best known for reporting on auto racing, particularly NASCAR, and for his work on television studio shows and pit reporting.

Early life

Byrnes was born in Chicago, Illinois. He spent his childhood in New Carrollton, Maryland, where his interest in racing developed before he began a career in sports media.

Career

He began covering motorsport events in 1985, focusing mainly on national stock car racing. In 2001 Byrnes joined the broadcast team for NASCAR on Fox as a pit reporter. Over time he moved into studio roles and became the host of Fox Sports 1’s show NASCAR Race Hub, where he combined reporting, interviews, and analysis.

Personal life

Byrnes married Karen Goines in 1993. The couple had one son, Bryson. Colleagues and fans remembered him for his calm on-air presence and his long association with stock car racing coverage.

Illness and death

In 2015 Byrnes died at age 56 after a battle with head and neck cancer. He passed away on April 21, 2015, in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
