Steubenville, Ohio

History

The area that became Steubenville began as a frontier outpost. In 1786 a small garrison called Fort Steuben was established at the site and took its name from Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben, an inspector general of the Continental Army. The settlement that grew up around the fort later developed civic institutions and became the county seat for Jefferson County. Its growth was influenced by transportation on the Ohio River and the industries that followed.
