Steely Dan originated at Bard College in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York, where Donald Fagen and Walter Becker began writing songs together as students. Their recorded work is frequently characterized as an American blend of jazz and rock, presented by a studio-focused band that combined sophisticated arrangements with literate lyrics.

Timeline

The duo led Steely Dan through an initial period of activity from 1971 until 1981. After a long hiatus from recording and regular touring, they returned to performing live in 1993, appearing at numerous concerts and festivals (concerts) worldwide.

Recordings and legacy

Between 1972 and 1980 Steely Dan released seven studio albums, and following a lengthy break they issued two additional studio records between 2003 and 2006. The group has sold in excess of 40 million albums globally and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2001. Walter Becker died on September 3, 2017.
