Geography and population

Stabroek occupies a compact area in northern Belgium, with a landscape of fields, small roads and built-up village centers. According to older statistics, in 2007 the municipality had 17,627 inhabitants; the population has varied since then with the common patterns of suburban growth and local demographic change. The position near the international border gives the town both cross-border commuter links and rural character.

History and development

Historically Stabroek developed from a small agricultural parish into a mix of residential neighborhoods and farming plots. Like many communities in the region, it experienced gradual change in the 19th and 20th centuries as transport improved and nearby cities expanded. Local history is preserved in parish records, communal archives and the layout of older streets and farmsteads.

Government, economy and services

The municipality is administered by a local council and mayor in accordance with Belgian municipal law. The local economy is a combination of agriculture, small businesses and services that support daily life; many residents commute to larger employment centers in the Antwerp area or across the border.
