Southbridge is a city located in the United States, within the state of Massachusetts. The community is locally known by the nickname "The Eye of the Commonwealth" in reference to its historical role in optical manufacturing. History
Southbridge has a strong industrial history, shaped largely by the optics trade. For many decades the town hosted American Optical, which was among the leading makers of lenses and optical instruments in the world. Over the later 20th century much production moved out of the area and some operations shifted to locations outside the United States, including Mexico, while the company restructured and changed ownership. The decline of large‑scale local manufacturing had a notable effect on the town but also created opportunities for redevelopment of former factory sites.
