Overview
The South Hams is a largely rural district on the south coast of Devon in England. Its administrative centre is the town of Totnes, while the largest settlement is Ivybridge. The area combines sheltered estuaries, a rugged coastline and rolling agricultural land, making it a popular destination for visitors and a distinctive part of South West England.
Geography and landscape
South Hams stretches from the fringes of Dartmoor in the north to a complex coastline of coves, headlands and sandy beaches. Parts of the district fall within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a small section of Dartmoor National Park lies inside the district boundary. Major waterways include the River Dart and a number of estuaries such as the Kingsbridge/Salcombe estuary, which create sheltered harbours and important wildlife habitats.

History
The district has a long settlement history stretching back to medieval market towns and maritime trade. In the 20th century parts of the coastline were used for military exercises: during World War II Allied forces rehearsed amphibious operations in the area prior to the Normandy landings. Local heritage is visible in churches, manor houses and historic ports that reflect centuries of rural and seafaring life.
Economy, governance and conservation
Local economic activity is a mix of agriculture, small-scale fishing, tourism and service industries; many communities balance visitor demand with long-term conservation. The district council, based at Totnes, manages planning, housing and environmental services while national park and AONB designations impose additional protections. Transport links include road routes along the coast and rail connections at several towns, helping to connect South Hams to neighbouring urban centres.
Visitors and residents value South Hams for its scenic diversity, outdoor recreation and a network of historic settlements that together form one of England’s well-known coastal districts.
