Geography and subdivisions

Basel-Landschaft occupies the lower slopes of the Jura mountains and the plains that lead toward the Rhine. The canton is divided into several districts which group its municipalities for administrative purposes. Major districts and towns include:

  • Arlesheim
  • Liestal (capital)
  • Sissach
  • Laufen
  • Waldenburg

History and political identity

The canton has a distinct history from its neighbour Basel-Stadt. In the 19th century political differences led to a separation, creating two separate cantons. Today Basel-Landschaft operates within the Swiss federal system with its own elected parliament (Landrat) and executive council (Regierungsrat).

Economy, culture and landscape

The canton benefits economically from its proximity to the city of Basel: many residents commute to jobs in pharmaceuticals, finance and manufacturing centered in the Basel area, while small and medium enterprises and agriculture remain important locally. Vineyards, wooded Jura hills and hiking paths contribute to the region's recreational appeal. Cultural life mixes rural traditions with festivals and museums in larger towns.

Distinctive features and role

Basel-Landschaft is notable for its close functional ties to an international urban centre, cross-border workforce connections and a landscape that transitions quickly from suburban neighbourhoods to natural highlands. It is an example of how Swiss cantons can be compact yet diverse in economy, geography and community life.
