Geography and subdivisions

Basel-Landschaft occupies the lower slopes of the Jura mountains and the plains that lead toward the Rhine. The canton is divided into several districts which group its municipalities for administrative purposes. Major districts and towns include:

History and political identity

The canton has a distinct history from its neighbour Basel-Stadt. In the 19th century political differences led to a separation, creating two separate cantons.
