Overview

Song Jin-woo (Korean: 송진우; Hanja: 宋鎭禹, pen name Goha 고하 古下; May 8, 1889–December 30, 1945) was a prominent Korean journalist, educational advocate and politician during the first half of the 20th century. He is best known for his role in founding one of Korea’s major newspapers and for his involvement in post‑liberation political organizing.

Journalism and public life

Song played a central role in Korean media and public opinion. He was among the founders of the Dong-A Ilbo, established to provide an independent Korean voice in a period of colonial rule and national revival. Through editorial work, publishing and education initiatives, he sought to shape public debate on modernization, national identity and civic affairs. His pen name Goha appears on many editorials and essays of the era.

Political activity and organizations

After Korea’s liberation in 1945, Song moved into formal politics. He was active in efforts to organize parties and civic networks for the newly freed country and was counted among the founders of the Korean Democratic Party, a conservative political group formed in the months following liberation. His political stance combined commitments to national reconstruction, institutional development and civic education.

Assassination and aftermath

On December 30, 1945, Song Jin-woo was assassinated by members of a militant group known as Baekuisah (백의사; 白衣社). The killing occurred amid intense and often violent political conflict in Korea’s uncertain transition from colonial rule to independent governance. The circumstances and motives surrounding the assassination have been examined in the context of the polarized post‑liberation period.

Legacy

Song’s contributions to Korean journalism and early post‑war politics have been remembered in multiple ways. In 1962 he was awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation (건국훈장; 建國勳章) posthumously. The newspaper he helped establish, Dong-A Ilbo, continued as a major national daily and remains a significant part of his public legacy.
