Skansen: Stockholm's open-air museum and zoo

History and founding

Skansen was established in 1891 by Artur Hazelius (1833–1901), a folklorist and museum curator who also founded the Nordiska museet. Hazelius aimed to save examples of Swedish vernacular architecture and popular culture from rapid industrial change. The institution is widely regarded as a model for later open-air museums around the world and has expanded its buildings and programs over more than a century.

Collections, exhibits and activities

The museum consists of relocated and reconstructed buildings: farmhouses, manor houses, workshops and urban homes moved from different regions to recreate historical environments. Interpreters in period clothing demonstrate traditional skills such as baking, blacksmithing, weaving and carpentry.
