Overview

Barium bromide is an inorganic salt with the formula BaBr2. It is an ionic compound composed of barium cations (Ba2+) and bromide anions (Br−). Properties and structure

BaBr2 is a typical alkaline earth halide: electrically insulating as a solid, conductive when molten or dissolved. The solid crystallizes in arrangements common to other heavy halides and often occurs as the dihydrate, BaBr2·2H2O, which loses water on heating. In aqueous solution Ba2+ behaves as a typical divalent cation and will form characteristic precipitates with suitable anions.

Preparation and chemical behavior

Laboratory preparation is commonly achieved by neutralizing hydrobromic acid with a soluble barium base such as barium hydroxide or by treating barium carbonate with hydrobromic acid, followed by evaporation and crystallization. Chemically, BaBr2 reacts with sulfate ions to give insoluble barium sulfate (BaSO4), a reaction exploited to remove barium from solution or to test for sulfate. Bromide anions can participate in halide exchange and organic bromination reactions when used as a reagent.

Uses and applications

Barium bromide is used primarily as a reagent in chemical synthesis and in laboratories for preparing other barium compounds. It can serve as a bromide source in specific organic transformations and in analytical chemistry. Safety, handling and disposal

Soluble barium salts are toxic if ingested or absorbed; exposure can affect the nervous and muscular systems and requires prompt medical attention. Handling recommendations include using gloves, eye protection and working in a fume hood. Contaminated aqueous waste is often rendered safe by precipitation of barium as insoluble sulfate (addition of a sulfate source) before disposal.   • Distinct from barium sulfate: BaSO4 is highly insoluble and used medically because it is not absorbed; BaBr2 is soluble and therefore toxic if ingested.
  • Store in a dry, labeled container to avoid uptake of moisture (deliquescence is possible).

Because of its toxicity and the availability of safer alternatives for many applications, barium bromide is mainly handled by trained personnel in controlled settings.
