Ward was born into a Pavee family, the youngest of seven siblings. He gained his first experience in television in 2002 during his participation in the casting show Popstars: The Rivals of the British television station ITV. Here he reached the final of the best 30, but was then eliminated.
In 2005, he again took part in a casting show. Under the wing of his mentor Louis Walsh, he reached the finals of The X Factor as the winner of the group of 16 to 24-year-olds. In the voting of the final show on 17 December 2005, Ward then prevailed over his opponent Andy Abraham by a 1.2% margin of votes. A total of over 10.8 million votes were cast.
On 21 December 2005, Ward's debut single That's My Goal was released, immediately reaching the top of the UK charts and scoring a Christmas number one hit. The single sold 313,000 copies on its first day alone, putting it at number 3 in the list of fastest selling singles in the UK.
In early 2013, he participated in the eighth season of the figure skating show Dancing on Ice.
