Sharur District — Raion of Nakhchivan, Azerbaijan
Sharur District (raion) is an administrative and agricultural region in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan, known for its fertile plains, historic sites and role as a local transport and market center.
Overview
Sharur is an administrative district (a raion) in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic of Azerbaijan. The district lies within the exclave of Nakhchivan, which is itself an autonomous republic of Azerbaijan (Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic). Its administrative centre is the town of Sharur. The district's location is commonly given as coordinates 39°33′N 45°04′E (39.550°N 45.067°E).
Geography and environment
Sharur District occupies part of the lowland plain that stretches along the Aras River valley. The terrain includes irrigated agricultural plains and more arid, hilly areas toward the margins. The climate is continental with hot summers and cold winters, supporting dryland grains, orchards and vegetable cultivation where irrigation is available.
Administration and settlements
The raion is organized around the central town, with numerous villages and rural municipalities forming its local government structure. Settlements are typically clustered near irrigation sources and roads that connect Sharur to other parts of Nakhchivan. Local administration is responsible for services such as education, health clinics and municipal utilities.
History and cultural note
Sharur has a long human presence reflected in archaeological finds across the region, and it has been influenced by Persian, Turkic and Russian/Soviet administrations over the centuries. During the Soviet period the area was formalized into a raion; since Azerbaijan's independence, Sharur has remained an important local center within the autonomous republic. Traditional crafts, folk music and seasonal agricultural festivals remain part of local cultural life.
Economy and land use
The district's economy is predominantly agricultural. Common activities include grain growing, fruit and vegetable production, and animal husbandry. Small- and medium-sized enterprises in food processing, repair services and trade are concentrated in the town of Sharur, which functions as the market hub for surrounding villages.
Transport, landmarks and notable facts
Road links connect Sharur to the Nakhchivan capital and to interregional routes; transport infrastructure supports the movement of agricultural produce. Notable local features include rural historic sites, village mosques and remnants of older settlement layers found by archaeologists. As part of the Nakhchivan exclave, Sharur's strategic and cultural role is shaped by its position at the crossroads of South Caucasus geography and history.
