Early life and the Titanic

Barbara West was born in Bournemouth, England. In April 1912 she and members of her family boarded the Titanic, then making its maiden voyage. When the liner struck an iceberg and subsequently sank on 15 April 1912, Barbara was an infant and was placed into a lifeboat with other women and children. The disaster left a deep imprint on public memory and on the many families involved, but Barbara herself rarely spoke about the event in later years.

Later life

After the disaster, Barbara and her family settled in England. She married and took the surname Dainton, raised a family and lived most of her adult life in relative privacy. In her later decades she lived in Truro, Cornwall, where she died on 16 October 2007 at the age of 96. Her approach to her own survival was low-key: she did not make frequent public appearances and agreed to only a small number of interviews.

Legacy and significance

Barbara West is remembered primarily for her status among Titanic survivors. At the time of her death she was the second-to-last survivor overall and the last person alive who had travelled in second class on the ship. Her passing left a single remaining survivor, highlighting how the sinking remains within living memory only for a finite span of time.
