Adams County is a county in the U.S. state Ohio, located in the southern part of the state along the Ohio River. According to the 2010 census the county had a population of 28,550. The county seat is West Union, often cited by name as West Union. The county was created in 1797 and was named for John Adams, the second President of the United States.

Geography and landscape

Adams County covers about 586 square miles (1,520 km²). Its landscape is typical of southern Ohio's portion of the Appalachian Plateau: rolling hills, forested ridges and river valleys. The Ohio River defines part of the county's southern boundary, and smaller streams and tributaries carve narrow valleys through predominantly rural terrain. The mix of farmland, woodlots and steep slopes gives the county a largely agricultural and outdoor recreation character.

History and development

Established in the late 18th century as the Northwest Territory was being settled, Adams County grew from frontier settlements and river commerce. Its name honors an early national leader, and through the 19th century small towns sprang up along trade routes and agricultural areas. The county retains many small villages and historic structures that reflect early American and frontier eras.

Communities and economy

The county seat and local government center is West Union. Other incorporated communities include Peebles, Manchester and Seaman. The local economy is dominated by farming, small-scale manufacturing, service businesses and tourism tied to outdoor recreation and historic sites. Population density remains low compared with urban Ohio counties, and many residents live in dispersed rural settings or small towns.

Notable sites and distinctions

Adams County is home to cultural and natural attractions that draw visitors. A prehistoric earthwork known as the Serpent Mound is situated within the county and is one of the region's best-known archaeological sites. Riverfront villages preserve 19th-century buildings and offer access for boating and fishing. The county's mix of woods and open land supports hunting, hiking and scenic drives through Appalachian-style countryside.
