The band combined raw, riff-oriented rock with tuneful songwriting and an atmospheric edge. Lineups changed over time, but core members included Gary Lee Conner, Van Conner and Mark Lanegan; various drummers and additional musicians joined for recordings and tours. Screaming Trees recorded for independent labels and later for a major label, releasing a sequence of albums and singles that showed a progression from lo-fi indie rock toward a fuller, radio-friendly rock sound in the early 1990s.
History and recordings
Screaming Trees released their debut album, Clairvoyance, in 1986 and continued to record through the 1980s and 1990s. While never achieving the massive commercial success of some contemporaries, they attracted attention during the grunge era and received increased airplay and festival exposure in the early 1990s. One of their best-known songs reached alternative radio and contributed to wider recognition, and their albums documented a steady development in production and songwriting.
Role in the grunge movement and legacy
The band is often associated with the Pacific Northwest scene that produced artists who brought alternative rock to mainstream attention in the early 1990s. Screaming Trees shared stages and audiences with several better-known acts, and they are remembered for blending heavier rock with melodic and psychedelic influences. Singer Mark Lanegan later pursued a well-regarded solo career and collaborations, helping to keep interest in the band alive after their breakup in 2000.
