Political career and offices

Islam served in multiple ministerial roles in governments led by the Awami League. His portfolios included responsibilities for local government, rural development and cooperative affairs, and later public administration at the national level. He also held high-level party responsibilities, serving as a senior party official and organizing leader. As an elected legislator he represented constituencies in the Mymensingh area and took part in parliamentary work on administration and development issues.

In November 2018, Islam was diagnosed with stage‑4 lung cancer. He received medical treatment abroad and passed away on 3 January 2019 in Bangkok, Thailand. Reports at the time noted the seriousness of his condition following the diagnosis of advanced lung cancer (stage‑4). His death prompted condolences across the political spectrum and reflections on his long involvement in public life.

Widely remembered for his organizational skills and long service, Sayed Ashraful Islam remains a noteworthy figure in the recent political history of Bangladesh. His career illustrates the close linkages between party leadership and state administration in contemporary Bangladeshi politics, and his work continued to influence debates about local government and public administration after his passing.
