Saulius Sondeckis
Lithuanian violinist, conductor and teacher who founded the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra in 1960 and led it for over four decades.
Saulius Sondeckis (11 October 1928 – 3 February 2016) was a prominent Lithuanian violinist, conductor, orchestra leader and pedagogue. He is best known as the founder and long-time artistic director of the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble he shaped from its inception in 1960 and led as principal conductor until 2004. Over his career he balanced work as a performer, an interpreter of both classical and contemporary repertoire, and a teacher of the next generation of musicians.
Born in Šiauliai, Sondeckis received his musical education at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he trained as a violinist before turning increasingly to conducting. His professional life combined solo and chamber playing with the leadership of ensembles. He gained a reputation for clear, attentive ensemble direction and for promoting Lithuanian music alongside the wider European repertoire.

Career and repertoire
In 1960 Sondeckis established the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, creating a flexible ensemble that could perform intimate chamber works as well as arrangements of larger pieces suited to a smaller orchestra. Under his direction the ensemble toured extensively and made numerous recordings, bringing attention to both classical masterworks and contemporary compositions by Lithuanian and regional composers. Sondeckis often balanced works from the Baroque and Classical periods with 20th-century music, encouraging new writing and collaborations.
As a performer and conductor he was associated with qualities such as precision, transparency of texture and a focus on musical line. He led concerts, broadcasts and recordings that expanded the visibility of Lithuanian orchestral culture on the international stage and helped to establish chamber orchestra practice in the region.
Teaching and influence
Sondeckis maintained a lasting role as an educator at the Lithuanian Academy and in music festivals and masterclasses. His teaching emphasized ensemble awareness, technique for string players and the art of conducting. Many of his students went on to professional careers in orchestras, chamber groups and as conductors. Through both his pupils and the ensemble he founded, Sondeckis left an enduring imprint on Lithuania's musical institutions.
