Overview

Santee is a suburban community in San Diego County, California, located east of central San Diego in the county's East County region. At the 2010 United States census the population was 53,413. The city combines residential neighborhoods, retail centers and preserved open space, and is part of the San Diego metropolitan area.

Geography and character

The city sits among low hills and river valleys drained by the San Diego River. Santee's landscape includes canyons, riparian corridors and developed neighborhoods that give it a mix of suburban and semi-rural character. Public parks, trailheads and the well-known Santee Lakes provide recreational space; the climate is Mediterranean with warm, dry summers and mild winters.

History and development

The land that is now Santee was long inhabited by the Native Kumeyaay people and later came under Spanish and Mexican influence before becoming part of the United States. Agricultural uses and small communities dominated the area through much of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Santee experienced more rapid residential and commercial development in the mid- to late-20th century and incorporated as a city in 1980 to better manage local services and planning.

Transportation and economy

Santee's economy is typical of suburban cities: local retail, service businesses and light industry serve residents and neighboring communities. Major roadways provide connections to the rest of San Diego County, and transit links offer commuter options. Education is provided by local elementary and secondary school districts serving city neighborhoods.

Recreation and community life

Outdoor recreation is a defining feature: Santee Lakes attracts anglers and families, and nearby regional parks and trail networks support hiking, biking and birdwatching. Community events, school activities and neighborhood associations contribute to a civic identity focused on family life and open-space preservation.
