The Santa Fe University of Art and Design (often abbreviated SFUAD) was an independent, four-year institution in Santa Fe, New Mexico, that concentrated on visual, performing and design arts. Over its long history the school combined traditional liberal arts education with studio-based majors and professional preparation in fields such as film, theatre, animation, photography, graphic design and creative writing.
History
The institution traces its roots to 1859 when it was established as St. Michael's College. A later state charter recognizing degree-granting authority was granted in 1874. In 1966 the college adopted the name College of Santa Fe; in 2010 it was renamed Santa Fe University of Art and Design to reflect a strategic focus on arts education. For institutional records and historical summaries see regional resources and archives such as local repositories.
Academics and programs
SFUAD offered Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees across a range of creative disciplines, along with a small number of graduate offerings. The curriculum emphasized small classes, individualized critique, portfolio development and exhibition opportunities. Students frequently engaged in hands-on production, internships and community collaborations that connected the campus with Santa Fe's active cultural sector.
Facilities and film production
A distinctive asset of the campus was an on-site production complex and sound stages that supported both educational projects and commercial film work. The availability of studio space attracted independent filmmakers and production crews who sought locations and technical support outside major urban centers. The studio facilities also provided students with direct experience in film production and technical roles; more detailed facility descriptions are available through campus materials and facility listings at campus facilities information.
Operations, closure and legacy
Like many small private institutions, SFUAD experienced financial and enrollment pressures in the 2010s. Reported tuition figures in the early 2010s give a sense of its cost of attendance (for example, a 2013 figure often cited was about $27,996 per year); however, changing market conditions and fiscal challenges led to a decision to cease instruction and close the university in 2018. Since closure, elements of the historic campus and its facilities have been sold, repurposed or retained for new educational and cultural uses, and alumni and former faculty continue to contribute to the region's arts community. Official notices and legal records concerning the charter, degrees and institutional disposition can be consulted through the institution's filings and public statements regarding the charter.
