Geography and environment

Sangha's landscape is chiefly lowland rainforest crossed by tributaries of the Congo River. The dense forest supports high biodiversity, including large mammals, primates and an abundance of birdlife. Much of the territory remains remote, with river transport and unpaved roads providing the main access routes.

Administration

Administratively, the department is organized around the urban commune of Ouésso and several rural districts. Local government responsibilities include land management, forestry regulation and delivery of basic services to scattered communities.

People and history

The population is ethnically diverse, comprising various Bantu-speaking groups and forest-dwelling communities. Historically the area was integrated into colonial trade routes via its rivers and later attracted commercial logging interests. Rural settlements are typically small and rely on subsistence farming, hunting and fishing.

Sangha is notable for its contribution to Congo Basin conservation; parts of the department lie near or within internationally recognized protected landscapes that are important for wildlife and climate regulation.
