Sándor Popovics (22 June 1939 – 1 July 2019) was a professional footballer and later a coach and administrator who built a long career in Central and Western Europe. Born in Keszthely, Hungary, he made his name as a forward before moving to play in Germany and then the Netherlands. Over several decades Popovics combined on-field experience with roles in coaching, general management and scouting in Dutch football.
Playing career
Popovics began his senior playing career in Hungary as a forward for Újpest Dózsa between 1958 and 1960. Seeking opportunities abroad, he continued in Germany where he represented SpVgg Fürth from 1960 until 1963. In 1963 he moved to the Netherlands and competed for Sparta during the 1963–64 season, and subsequently played for FC Zaanstreek from 1964 to 1966. His playing years spanned diverse football cultures and leagues, and helped prepare him for later work in coaching and club management.
Coaching and administrative roles
After retiring as a player Popovics turned to coaching at the amateur and semi-professional level in the Netherlands. Across the 1970s he managed a string of clubs including Quick (1970–1971), MVV '27 (1971–1972), RFC Rotterdam (1972–1974), Overmaas (1974–1976), Unitas (1976–1977), Xerxes (1977–1978) and Barendrecht (1978–1980). These appointments reflect a common path in Dutch football, where former professionals often contribute to the development of local teams and young players.
Beyond coaching, Popovics held executive posts: he served as general manager at ADO Den Haag and later accepted a scouting role at NAC, where he was named head scout in February 2002. In these capacities he applied his playing and coaching experience to recruitment, talent identification and the organizational side of the game.
Personal life, nationality and legacy
Popovics was born in Keszthely, Hungary and became a naturalized citizen of the Netherlands in 1970. His bi-cultural life is representative of many post-war footballers who migrated to find professional opportunities in Western Europe. He is remembered for a steady commitment to Dutch club football both on and off the pitch. Popovics died in Roosendaal, Netherlands, on 1 July 2019. Reports indicated he had suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in his later years.
