Work and activities

Mahmud combined elements of community building, arts programming and civil society advocacy. History and development

Death and aftermath

On 24 April 2015 Sabeen Mahmud was shot dead in Karachi after attending a public event. Her assassination drew condemnation from domestic and international groups and led to calls for an impartial investigation into the motive and the perpetrators. The killing intensified debates about safety for activists, the protection of free expression, and responsibilities of state institutions to investigate attacks on civil society figures.

Legacy and significance

Mahmud is remembered for creating a visible, persistent platform for dialogue in Pakistan and for encouraging civic participation among younger generations. T2F continues in public memory as an example of community-driven cultural infrastructure. Her life and death stimulated renewed attention to the risks faced by human rights defenders and to the importance of safe public spaces for discussion.
