History

The county was formed on December 14, 1825. Settlement began in the years before and after formation as pioneers moved into south-central Kentucky. Over the 19th and 20th centuries the area developed around small towns, family farms and local commerce rather than large urban centers.

Russell County lies in a region of rolling hills, streams and mixed forest typical of central Kentucky.
