Rotselaar is a Dutch-speaking municipality in central Belgium, situated in the province of Flemish Brabant. It lies at approximately 50°57′N 4°42′E and had a recorded population of 15,155 inhabitants in 2007; later figures have varied with normal demographic change. The municipality is part of the administrative region of Belgium and of the province of Flemish Brabant. For official information see the local municipal page.

Subdivisions and character

Rotselaar comprises several population centres with a mix of residential areas, farmland and small industry. The best-known sub-municipalities are:

  • Rotselaar (the central town)
  • Werchter, internationally recognised for its annual music festival
  • Wezemaal, a village with local services and historic buildings

These communities combine a semi-rural landscape with commuter links to larger Flemish cities. Dutch is the official language and local government is organised as a municipal council headed by a mayor.

History and development

The area now called Rotselaar has medieval roots typical of central Belgium: small agricultural settlements and parish communities that developed along local roads and waterways. Over time the locality modernised while preserving village centres and green spaces. Transport and proximity to larger urban centres encouraged residential growth in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Culture, economy and points of interest

Rotselaar combines local civic life, small businesses and cultural events. The village of Werchter is notable for hosting Rock Werchter, one of Europe’s major contemporary music festivals, which draws international audiences and performers. Other local attractions include parish churches, community festivals, walking routes and riverside areas that reflect the region’s mixed agricultural and suburban character.
