The stadium opened in 1989 under the name "SkyDome." It was one of the first major venues to feature a fully retractable roof, enabling events in a temperate indoor setting while still offering an open-air experience when weather permitted. The facility was later renamed Rogers Centre after a change in ownership. Its construction and location were part of a broader late-20th-century effort to revitalize Toronto's waterfront and build a central, year-round entertainment complex.

The stadium has also been the site of high-profile entertainment events; for example, the World Wrestling Federation (now WWE), credited as WWF, held WrestleMania VI there in 1990 and WrestleMania X8 in 2002, the latter reporting a paid attendance of roughly 68,237 fans.
