Overview

Richard Davalos (November 5, 1930 – March 8, 2016) was an American actor whose career spanned more than five decades. He appeared in notable mid-20th-century films and worked steadily in television and theatre. He is widely remembered for his early screen breakout opposite James Dean in East of Eden and for a supporting part in Cool Hand Luke.

Career and roles

Davalos began acting professionally in the early 1950s and gained attention with his portrayal of Aron Trask in the 1955 film East of Eden, a screen adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel that also helped launch the career of James Dean. Over the years he took on a variety of supporting and character roles, often playing earnest, intense or quietly sympathetic figures. In 1967 he appeared in Cool Hand Luke, a popular prison drama led by Paul Newman, where he was credited with a small but memorable part.

Range and mediums

Although best known for his film work, Davalos maintained a presence in television and on stage. Like many mid-century character actors, he moved between guest spots on series and bit parts in feature films, building a long, steady career rather than pursuing leading-star status. His work is representative of the reliable supporting players who populated American cinema and television in the 1950s–1980s.

Personal life and legacy

Born in The Bronx, New York, Davalos later lived and worked on both coasts as projects required. He retired from acting in 2008. His family includes actress Elyssa Davalos (his daughter) and actress Alexa Davalos (his granddaughter), continuing a multi‑generational connection to the screen. Davalos died on March 8, 2016, at a hospital in Burbank, California, at the age of 85.
