Overview

Reutte is a market town in Austria that serves as the administrative center of the Reutte District. Located in the northwestern part of the country, the town lies on the banks of the Lech River and had a population of about 6,772 people in 2019. Reutte functions as the main service and commercial hub for the surrounding high-valley communities.

Geography and landscape

The town is set in a broad alpine valley where the river Lech flows eastward between forested slopes and limestone peaks. History and development

Reutte developed as a market and local trade center on historic east–west routes through the Alps. Over centuries the town grew around trade, timber processing and crafts that served rural communities in the region. Remnants of military and defensive works in the area testify to its strategic location on approaches between what is now Bavaria and the interior of Tyrol.

Today the economy combines local services, small industry, tourism and seasonal recreation. As the district seat Reutte hosts municipal and district administration offices.
