Red box (payphone phreaking device)
A red box is a small device used by phone phreaks to mimic payphone coin deposit tones and obtain free calls; once common in the 20th century, it became obsolete as telephone systems modernized.
Overview
A red box was a simple tone generator used by phone phreakers to trick payphone systems into registering coin deposits. By replaying the characteristic sounds that a coin chute produced when coins were inserted, the red box caused the network to believe payment had been made and allowed the call to proceed without actual coins.
How it worked
Payphones emitted audible signals to central exchanges when coins were deposited; the red box reproduced those signals and played them into the handset. Early versions were homemade, built from modified tone dialers, electronic circuits, or even consumer devices capable of producing the required tones.
