Overview

Rapperswil is a historic town on the eastern shore of Lake Zurich (Zürichsee) in the See-Gaster region of the canton of St. Gallen, Switzerland. Before 2007 it existed as an independent municipality with a compact medieval centre and a lakeside setting. At the end of 2006 the local population was recorded at 7,601 inhabitants; on 1 January 2007 the communities of Rapperswil and Jona merged to form the new municipality of Rapperswil-Jona.

Landmarks and layout

The town is notable for a well-preserved Old Town clustered around a hilltop castle. Rapperswil Castle overlooks the lake and contains museum displays. Narrow streets, medieval walls and a harbour area lead to tree-lined promenades along the shore. A timber footbridge links the town to the opposite side of the lake via the causeway (Seedamm) that spans the shallow part of the lake, creating a distinctive crossing that is both a transport link and a popular stroll.

History and development

Rapperswil developed in the Middle Ages around its castle and a market site, growing as a regional centre for trade and local administration. Over centuries the town retained many historic features while modern services and housing expanded outward. Administrative reorganisation at the start of 2007 brought Rapperswil together with neighbouring Jona to create a larger municipal entity, intended to coordinate planning and public services for the adjacent settlements.

Culture, economy and transport

The town attracts visitors for sightseeing, lake recreation and festivals, and functions as a local commercial and service hub. Attractions commonly noted by visitors include rose gardens and public parks that give the town a reputation for horticulture, the castle museum with cultural exhibits, and a marina area. Rapperswil is connected by rail and road to Zurich and other Swiss centres, and lake boats and local buses provide additional links for commuters and tourists.
